Mobiliário em Notícia highlights “Echoes of the Void” among Portugal’s award-winning projects at WAF
Mobiliário em Notícia featured Segmento Urbano’s Echoes of the Void as one of the two Portuguese projects recognised with a WAFX Award in the Ageing and Health category at the 2025 World Architecture Festival.
Under the theme “Design with purpose”, the article reflects on architecture as an active response to contemporary challenges, highlighting the ability of design to care for people, engage with its surroundings, and create meaningful emotional experiences.
Set within the landscape of Furnas, on São Miguel Island in the Azores, Echoes of the Void is presented as a place of refuge and contemplation for people approaching the end of life. Inspired by the five stages of grief, the project develops a symbolic journey through light and shadow, fullness and emptiness, while establishing a sensitive relationship between the individual, architecture, and landscape.
Alongside the University of Évora Health Centre by CLOU architects, the project represents a Portuguese architecture grounded in empathy, human scale, and a strong sense of place.
