The Plan highlights “Echoes of the Void” in a reflection on architecture and the end-of-life experience
The international architecture magazine The Plan featured Segmento Urbano’s Echoes of the Void in an article exploring how architecture can contribute to a more humane and dignified end-of-life experience.
Bringing together three projects developed in different contexts, the article reflects on the role of design in creating spaces that respond not only to clinical needs but also to the emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of end-of-life care. Through their relationship with nature, light, privacy, and community, these projects propose environments where architecture becomes a form of care.
Conceived for Furnas, on São Miguel Island in the Azores, Echoes of the Void is presented as a sanctuary for people living with terminal illness. Inspired by the five stages of grief, the project creates a spatial journey between connection and solitude, using light, shadow, materiality, and landscape to support moments of reflection, intimacy, and acceptance.
